River transport could become the preferred transport alternative for low-value freight between Yangon and Mandalay, with improvements to navigation channels and terminals having the potential to cut Myanmar’s river transport costs. Myanmar has an extensive river network that is well positioned to serve the country’s main transport corridors, including the link between Yangon and Mandalay. However, main rivers are difficult to navigate because of shallow waters during the dry season, shifting navigation channels, and lack of terminal facilities. Other factors strongly constrain transport efficiency. Small investments are sufficient to enable the development of river transport in Myanmar. Recommended improvements to the Ayeyarwaddy River channel and the navigation conditions between Yangon and Mandalay, and the development of basic river port terminals, enabling mechanized operations, have the potential to cut Myanmar’s river transport costs in the long run.
