Evaluation of Flocculants: Optimizing Characteristics and Screening Methods |
摘要: |
This project proposes to study the factors involved in reducing turbidity in construction site stormwater to determine the most appropriate method for selecting chemical treatments. This will involve the following steps: (1) Select a range (15-20) of sediment (soil) types from around the state to represent most of those that would be encountered in road construction. This will be done with the assistance of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) regional and district staff using current construction projects as sources. These will be chemically and physically characterized thoroughly to determine if there are one or more properties which can predict flocculation success. (2) Test representative coagulants and flocculants with the sediments using both a paddle-type jar tester and manual (shaking) methods. (3) Determine floc characteristics and treated water quality to identify factors that lead to successful and unsuccessful treatment. Parameters that will be measured include particle/floc size and density, net charge, and turbidity over time. (4) From this work, determine the best screening method and test it on at least five active projects on which flocculants will be used. |
