Development of Decision Support Tools to Assess Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety: Development of Safety Performance Functions
项目名称: Development of Decision Support Tools to Assess Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety: Development of Safety Performance Functions
摘要: This project is aimed at developing critical decision tools for use in non-motorized traffic safety planning efforts, such as network screening or the evaluation of safety countermeasures. As a collaborative research between Western Michigan University (WMU), Wayne State University (WSU) and Tennessee State University (TSU), this study will focus on Michigan and Tennessee roadways and intersections and segments. One of the research tasks is to develop safety performance functions (SPFs) for pedestrian and bicyclists necessary for quantifying the effects of various factors (e.g., volumes, speeds, roadway geometry) on the accident risk for non-motorized users. To develop statistically reliable SPFs, cluster analysis, in combination with geographic information system (GIS), will be performed in order to uncover any clustering of the accidents per identified locations in Tennessee and Michigan. Also, the research team will integrate field evaluation of driver behavior and traffic operations to identify important motorized and non-motorized behaviors related with safety. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach will be utilized to relate measurable infrastructure and human characteristics to observed behaviors, which in turn explain the link between these behaviors and latent non-motorized accident frequency and severity.
