Design and Performance Verification of a Bridge Column/Footing/Pile System for Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) |

With the goal of producing dependable and cost-effective bridge substructure systems for ABC, the objectives of the proposed project are to: (1) Identify the various ABC foundation connection details in existing literature, assess their merits and deficiencies and identify the best practices suitable for field implementation; (2) Develop column-to-pile cap/foundation connection details that can be implemented economically and effectively using ABC methodologies; (3) Validate the performance of the proposed connection details through laboratory tests; (4) Validate the system performance analytically through consideration of soil and foundation interaction; and (5) Formulate design guidelines and details based on the test results and relevant literature, and develop a design guide with examples. The objectives and scope of the proposed project will be achieved through eight tasks: Task 1: Literature Review; Task 2: Identification of Prototype Bridge and Analytical models; Task 3: Design of column-to-pile cap connections; Task 4: Laboratory testing of connections; Task 5: Outdoor large-scale full-system testing; Task 6: Validation and modification of analytical models using experimental data; Task 7: Development of material for field implementation; and Task 8: Dissemination of project results. |
