摘要: New data collection technologies enable real-time traffic control more precise and efficient than what was earlier possible. This project develops novel control strategies based on this data, with an emphasis on two types of traffic control: (1) signalized intersection control, where cycle lengths and phasing may be adjusted based on observed demands and coordination with nearby intersections, and (2) pricing strategies, where tolls are adjusted in real time based on observed demand, in order to influence travelers to avoid congested areas. Both of these share a common methodological basis of adjusting traffic controls to prioritize particular vehicles to minimize congestion, accounting for human behavior and learning. The project will involve combining wireless routing algorithms with traffic engineering knowledge to create innovative control policies.
