Current process of assessing a steel pipeline involves running in-line inspection (ILI) tools, and/or hydrotesting. Neither of these yields the type and quality of information needed for adequate prediction of performance recently recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), if the pipe properties are unknown. Laboratory measurements from in-the-ditch cutouts are currently the only way to gain sufficient quality information. No acceptable measurement method exists for non-destructively obtaining those values, which together with ILI sizing of defects, can be used in determining the pressure rating. Pipe properties of interest are; outside diameter, wall thickness, and material properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, fracture toughness and transition temperature. With the exception of the diameter and wall thickness, these values are only currently available through destructive testing. |
