Transport processes on spatial networks are representative of a broad class of real world systems which, rather than being independent, are typically interdependent. Applying networks methods to empirical urban trips the project proposes to capture key features that arise when such systems are coupled together. The defined coupling is not solely topological, but relies on both the distribution of origins and destinations, and the resulting travel times in route assignment. The project seeks to recover the largest network utility when coupling alternative modes of transport in Boston/Cambridge area. Based on data driven travel demands the study of coupled spatial systems is the first methodological step towards improved decision-making processes in the urban transit services. The project will generate couple networks from mobility models, extracted from big data sources of actual users as opposed to synthetic populations. |
