摘要: Due to expansion of the Utah State University (USU) satellite campus at the Utah Botanical Center, the current Roadside Simulation Area is no longer available and the project is seeking to re-construct a new Roadside Simulation Laboratory (RSL) to continue the research. A preferred area has been selected by USU researchers near Kaysville Utah along I-15. This area is an abandoned rest stop that will provide enough space for both RSL and F2F research activities. In addition to re-constructing a RSL, F2F researchers are anxious to return to the roadside such that knowledge gleaned from the 2009-2010 RSL activities and other F2F experiences can be taken back to the roadside. Also, new crops may be studied under new planting and rotation strategies. New varieties, planting, and cultural methods have been gleaned from previous RSL activities.It is believed that with new RSL and roadside plot work, research progress can be synergistic and help enhance the state/national knowledge base. New planting and agronomic techniques discovered at the RSL in 2009-2010 can be tested under roadside conditions and allow for a control and comparison environment with both RSL and F2F plantings in the same location. The project will be furthering the research on roadside right of ways via the RSL and Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) right of way plots, as well as expanding efforts into other underutilized acres. The technical objectives of this project are to: (1) Continue to develop and test optimal agronomic practices given roadside growing conditions; (2) Expand and determine optimum feedstock crops to be grown; (3) Increase yield of biofuel feedstocks for bioenergy; and (4) Continue to model new efforts for the national alliance. The continuation of this research project proposes a comparison of three different plant establishment methods including a conventional single pass no-till drill, a single pass culti-planting aeration technique, and a single pass culti-banding process, which includes the single aeration planting technique described above combined with organic banding over the furrow post planting on a simulated roadside area. Proposed feedstocks for this project are safflower (used in 2009), camelina, and canola (treated as a biannual). Under the direction of Dr. Ralph Whitesides, a research team of agronomists, economists, and engineers provides a strong resource pool that lends expertise to the successful completion of this project. In addition to faculty, USU has analysis, planting and harvesting equipment, laboratories, land, and staff that will be utilized in studying this research problem. The plan is to investigate the RSL techniques on UDOT location/s with more appropriate soil depth areas in real time. Plots with repetitions of 6X will be established away from roadway areas at the Kaysville turnout site. Camelina will be added to the list of plant species investigated in this trial, along with safflower and canola treated as biennial crops. Plots will be similar to those established along roadsides in previous years (8'X20'), and organized in a randomized complete block design.
