摘要: The research will identify the major nutritional components present in crude glycerin produced from a biodiesel manufacture, the digestive characteristics of crude glycerin when fed to ruminant and non-ruminant species, and how to optimize crude glycerin use in the animal's diet. The information gained will enable a value to be discovered for crude glycerin. The first year's research will determine the rate of glycerin fermentation, the free fatty acid yield and the ratio from glycerin fermentation as well as the microbial protein yield from glycerin fermentation. It will be conducted in vitro using continuous culture fermenters. The effect of glycerin level on growth performance and carcass of beef steers will also be determined. Data to assess an initial value of glycerin for use in beef feeds and to determine if any beneficial or potentially negative effects from including glycerin in the diet of feedlot cattle.
