Marls and marly soils are commonly encountered throughout the State of Indiana. While such soils pose concerns related to settlement and stability of overlying fills/embankments, relatively little is known about their engineering properties. The project proposes to perform an in depth characterization of the geotechnical properties of marl that will provide a dataset of engineering properties that will aid in future design and construction on these soils. The investigation will involve field testing, soil sampling and laboratory tests to quantify deformation and strength properties. Guidelines will be developed for sampling and testing of these soils. The investigation will be the first of its kind.
