The lab will address the needs of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD), other agencies, and the public, as well as serve as a foundation to conduct "leading edge" research and training of graduate students. The lab will primarily serve as a catalyst to collect and store data from various Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) sources such as traffic monitoring systems (e.g. video detectors and cameras), as well as other sources of data such as crash data, planning data, weigh-in-motion data, etc. The ITS lab will also process this data and make it available to interested agencies for use in applications of their needs. The ultimate goal is to create a centralized location for data that can effectively support applications of immediate and long-term needs. The second phase of the establishment of the ITS lab will achieve the following objectives: (1) examine the space allocated for the lab at the Louisiana Transport Research Center (LTRC) and develop a layout for the equipment and a remodeling plan; (2) purchase and install the hardware and accessories required for the lab; (3) identify and update the data sources from which the lab will be collected data routinely; (4) develop a protocol and procedure for data collection from each identified source and mechanism to store the data on a database server for easy and efficient retrieval and analysis; (5) develop a web interface for basic data retrieval and analysis functions; and (6) establish lab operating policies and protocols for data access and research conduct . |
