Evaluating the Impact of Detour Messaging on Actual Driver Detour Behavior
项目名称: Evaluating the Impact of Detour Messaging on Actual Driver Detour Behavior
摘要: Messaging via Variable Message Signs (VMS) can be presented to travelers in various ways and wordings. For example, “Crash 13 miles ahead, use detour” and “Use detour, crash ahead, use US-89” could both be used to inform drivers of an incident and a suggested detour. Anecdotally, there is a noticeable difference in detour rates corresponding to how “startling” the messaging is. It is difficult – often impossible - to evaluate the impact of messaging in real-time, due to the high workload of managing the incident. However, HERE speed data and traffic signal count data can be used to evaluate detouring during past incidents. Understanding past detouring trends in locations with more frequent incidents and detour messaging can help traffic managers prepare for and manage future incidents. In particular, creating standardized, impactful messaging will ideally increase public compliance with detours and improve traffic incident management (TIM), safety, and mobility.
