The objective of this research is to develop a guide for public transportation agencies and departments of transportation to mitigate exposure to airborne diseases to protect the health and well-being of transportation system employees while at work and to protect the traveling public. The research should identify near- and longer-term strategies and practices that will (1) reduce the likelihood of transportation employees and the public from contracting airborne diseases, (2) increase confidence in the safety of transportation systems, and (3) help agencies make more informed decisions regarding the health and well-being of their employees and the traveling public during periods of airborne contagion. The research deliverable(s) should present:
(1) Lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding employee and passenger exposure to airborne contagions.
(2) Key findings for vehicles and facilities engineering improvements to transportation system air quality monitoring and air filtering systems including but not limited to (1) best practices for retrofitting existing systems that effect contagion transmission in vehicles and facilities, and (2) options protecting employees and passengers from airborne health risks that may be incorporated into new transportation vehicles and facilities.
(3) Action-based range of effective strategies and practices that mitigate contagion pertaining to policies and procedures; personal protective equipment (PPE); and worker behavior. The strategies and practices should be appropriate for different transportation modes and work environments.
(4) Effective approaches for messaging, engagement, and communication that facilitate wide-spread awareness and enhance acceptance of the strategies and practices presented in the guide.
(5) Techniques to evaluate different strategies and practices to mitigate exposure to airborne contagion.
(6) General cost estimates of different strategies and practices, when feasible.
(7) Implementation steps to mitigate future outbreaks of airborne contagion. |
