The objective of this project is to determine the cause of longitudinal cracking in an unbonded concrete overlay (with short joint spacing) on an I-72 experimental feature project. This project will evaluate the existing literature and design procedures for potential mechanisms that are contributing to the premature distresses as exhibited on the eastbound stretch of I-72 east of the Riverton exit. These distresses have not occurred in the westbound lanes of I-72 that utilized a nonwoven geotextile fabric interlayer. Specifically, this study will investigate past published testing to assess the interlayer impact on unbonded concrete overlay response and performance. Additionally, a laboratory investigation is proposed to supplement the findings in the literature and to confirm the mechanism(s) causing the observed, premature longitudinal cracking. |
