As Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) shifts its focus to preservation and maintenance of the existing transportation system, the amount of road work being performed under traffic continues to increase. According to Section 616.12 of the MoDOT Engineering Policy Guide (EPG), speed reductions of 10 mph are recommended when workers are within 10 feet of the traffic lane or when there is head-to-head traffic on multilane highways. To manage work zone speeds, MoDOT utilizes various tools such as signage, speed trailers, red/blue lights for contractors, and law enforcement presence. MoDOT would like to learn more about the effectiveness of these tools and about the practices of other DOTs for managing speeds in work zones. |
