The impact of COVID-19 on public transportation has been substantial. The public transit agencies are facing unprecedented challenges, including its operator's absenteeism rate, a sharp decline in the number of passengers, the tightening of funding sources, new disinfection practices, and the maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) for the safety of operators and riders. Meanwhile, public transit is critical for essential workers to commute and for citizens to access food and medical services. These challenges will continue changing and impact public transit significantly. The proposed project is to study the impacts of COVID-19 on public transit by the following aspects: (1) Impacts of COVID-19 on ridership and public transit operation, (2) existing countermeasures employed by public transit agencies, and (3) best practices and lessons learned. Understanding how COVID-19 impact public transit will be the basis for future transportation planning for maintaining safe and effective public transit service under such special circumstances. |
