Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Practices. Topic 52-16. Visualization of Highway Performance Measures
项目名称: Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Practices. Topic 52-16. Visualization of Highway Performance Measures
摘要: The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) and the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act (FAST-ACT) requirements for state departments of transportation (DOTs) to report performance measures have increased the focus on performance measures as important management, reporting, and communications tools for decision makers. DOTs are challenged to find the best methods to efficiently and effectively visualize performance measures. Visualizations are tools for analyzing, reporting, and communicating the complexities of a transportation system and for synthesizing these intricacies into presentations that can be easily understood. The objective of this synthesis is to document current practices and methods used by DOTs to visualize highway performance measures and how that information is being used for communication and decision support. Information to be gathered includes (but is not limited to): types of performance measures being visualized (e.g., PM1, PM2, PM3, DOT performance measures, highway network reliability measures); visualization techniques for roadway performance measures (e.g., dashboards, story maps and other geospatial representations, publications, real time operations, infographics, interactive visualizations); visualization strategies for different audiences (e.g., internal DOT staff, the public); governance or formal processes for developing visualizations from beginning to end (e.g., written guidance, data management, internal review, 508 compliance); staffing used for developing visualizations (e.g., internal DOT staff skill sets, external partners); other resources for developing visualizations (e.g., data sources); visualization software tools used; DOT maturity for supporting visualization of performance measures; DOT methods for evaluating effectiveness of visualizations; examples of DOT performance measure visualizations; and challenges and constraints. Information will be collected through literature review, a survey of DOTs, and follow-up interviews with selected agencies for the development of case examples. Information gaps and suggestions for research to address those gaps will be identified.
