Develop Guidelines and Best Practices for Bonding Hot-Mix Asphalt Portland Cement Concrete Pavement
项目名称: Develop Guidelines and Best Practices for Bonding Hot-Mix Asphalt Portland Cement Concrete Pavement
摘要: Bonding hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures to existing Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement is a continuing problem throughout Texas. Poor bond failures of HMA have recently been reported with PCC pavements. Failure to achieve a good bond between the HMA and PCC pavements result in rapid surface failure either by deformation including pushing and shoving or surface delamination including potholes. This seems to be related to the material properties of the seal coat asphalts used as an underseal or tack coats (including membranes) that are used to bond to the concrete, moisture which maybe present in the concrete interfering with the bond, thickness of the HMA layer, surface condition or surface preparation of the concrete (i.e. smooth or polished versus cuffed surface), cleanliness of the PCC, quality and quantity of the applied bonding underseal or tack coat, possibly the rock rate used for underseals, and other factors. This type of failure can be exacerbated in areas of slow moving or stopping traffic such as intersections and is difficult to repair and often requires a much more expensive overlay to fully remedy the problem. In this projct, the research team will address the following: (1.) Develop a test procedure to measure bond strength of asphalt layer to PCC surfaces to ensure adequate bonding is achieved in the field. (2.) Using the test procedure developed in step 1,evaluate the effectiveness of different types of tack and sealcoat binders and quantities (shot rates) to maximize the bond to PCC. Also evaluate different types of concrete texturing techniques and methods of surface preparation prior to applying the tack or sealcoat binders to enhance bonding. (3.) Construct field test sections to validate the results of steps 1and 2. (4.) Develop specifications based on the proposed test procedure. (5. ) Develop guidelines and best practices on surface preparation techniques and materials selection to achieve adequate bond between HMA and PCC.
