摘要: Concrete barriers are used as permanent rigid barriers in medians to separate traffic, and on roadsides to shield hazards.Typically, these barriers are crash tested and their crashworthiness is evaluated according to either NCHRP Report 350, or more recently, AASHTO MASH standards. Attachments may be deployed on top of concrete barriers for various reasons. One of the reasons for these attachments is to deter pedestrians from crossing highways. Attachments to concrete barrier should be evaluated to assess any effects on the impact performance of the concrete barriers due to direct interaction of the vehicle or its occupants with these attachments, or the interaction of any associated debris with other vehicles. Previous crash tests with passenger vehicles under MASHTL-3 impact conditions has highlighted the propensity for a vehicle to climb and potentially intrude into the area where these attachments would be deployed. The AASHTO Roadside Design Guide (RDG) does not provide guidance for attaching hardware on top of barriers... There is a need to evaluate the performance of concrete barriers with attachments that can deter pedestrians and improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists. Researchers will conduct a survey of TxDOT districts and other transportation agencies to identify existing implementation guidelines for attachments to concrete barriers to deter pedestrians. The team will identify existing technologies that can be mounted to concrete barriers and evaluate its impact performance through engineering analysis and finite element simulations. TTI will verify MASH Test Level 3 (TL-3) impact performance of the top-rated attachment systems through full-scale crash testing and provide design guidance for selection and implementation of attachments on top of barriers to deter pedestrians.
