摘要: There are currently no effective methods available for eliminating existing striping on roadways that do not have negative impacts on motorists. Striping must usually be eliminated for changes in permanent lane configurations or for shifting traffic during construction. In addition, striping contractors make errors on final pavement surfaces and there is no satisfactory method of correction. Current methods include blacking out existing striping with asphalt, paint, thermoplastic (with or without beads), flailing, strip sealing, water blasting, and complete roadway resurfacing. Complete resurfacing is expensive. Strip sealing can cause water to hold on the roadway. Water blasting removes the asphalt along with the stripe and leaves exposed aggregate which looks like white lines in a fresh asphalt surface. Water blasting is also a slow and expensive process. Flailing also leaves damaged surface areas. Water blasting and flailing cannot be used on sealcoat surfaces. Black-out wears off the existing surface and, at certain angles of the sun, can look like lane striping. This has the potential to cause drivers to follow the wrong lane lines, which is a major safety concern. TxDOT needs an economic way to eliminate existing striping that will last and won’t expose covered or removed striping on the existing roadway surface. The research team explore existing methods currently used in Texas and elsewhere. Researchers will test the most effective methods on different Texas roadway surfaces to determine the best methods of pavement marking removal. The purpose of this project is to develop recommendations for effective pavement marking elimination on various roadway surfaces on Texas highways.
