The use of rip-rap to protect against scour is very common both at the design stage and as a repair option. When the rip-rap fails, new rip-rap must be placed and additional cost is incurred. Making sure that the rip-rap will perform as planned will save money by avoiding sustained maintenance or replacement. Rip-rap is used extensively to protect abutments from scour and to repair bridge piers that are experiencing excessive scour depth. In many instances, the rip-rap has not performed correctly. At the pier, this can be due to the soil below the rip-rap continuing to scour away.On the abutment slope, this can be due to the rip-rap failing the slope because of the added weight from the rip-rap. There is a need to develop practical guidelines to ensure that the rip-rap performs as intended. The research team will conduct a synthesis of national research and in-use structures within the US and internationally to determine whether a filter is necessary or not between the rip-rap and the native soil. If a filter is found necessary, researchers will develop a specification for the filter. The synthesis study will address the stability of slopes with rip-rap covers and the research team will develop recommendations to ensure the stability of the slope after rip-rap placement. |
