The work performed in the proposed project will produce a "road map" for transportation-related geotechnical asset management in the state of Georgia. This program framework will include specific planning recommendations that address the most significant challenges for the implementation of a Geotechnical Asset Management (GAM) program in the state of Georgia, according to the NCHRP (2019) guidelines. The successful completion of the tasks considered in this project will lay the groundwork for future evaluation of retaining walls and other geotechnical assets at a statewide scale. Specific objectives within this scope of work include: (1) perform an exhaustive literature review of GAM related studies in the United States; (2) document and evaluate the current GAM related practices in the state of Georgia; (3) evaluate the applicability of the recommended procedures in the NCHRP (2019) report 903 and the GAM related practices in other states to the state of Georgia, identifying potential improvements; (4) create a GAM system for the state of Georgia to effectively track current and future geotechnical assets, reduce ongoing maintenance costs, and improve the decision making for upgrade and replacement; (5) implement a computational tool for GAM in the state of Georgia, which incorporates the tracking system from objective (4), allows to input the condition of different assets, and provides risk assessment tools according to the NCHRP (2019) guidelines customized for the state of Georgia; (6) provide a literature review on the use of image-based techniques on GAM; (7) provide a proof-of-concept in terms of using image-based technics for the evaluation of geotechnical assets by considering the performance of selected retaining walls in the metro Atlanta area; and (8) provide recommendations for a statewide GAM implementation in the state of Georgia. |
