Developed in Europe, stone-matrix asphalt (SMA) is a mix design for exceptionally durable wearing courses. SMA is a hot-mix asphalt with gap-graded aggregate, high asphalt binder content, and large coarse-aggregate fraction. This design provides a stable stone-to-stone skeleton, which is held together by a rich mixture of asphalt cement, filler, and stabilizing agents such as fibers or asphalt modifiers. SMA has been used in the United States since 1991. The main purpose of this research project is to determine the applicability of relatively soft aggregate (e.g., limestone, dolomite, or gravel) for SMA by providing sufficient surface stability and durability for interstate highways. |
