摘要: Heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs) are significant contributors of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions. As a result, communities with a large amount of truck traffic often experience elevated levels of diesel-related air pollution. There have been efforts on developing strategies to reduce the impacts of truck traffic, especially on disadvantaged communities. One such strategy is to route HDDTs in a way that reduces the exposure of community members to air pollutant emissions from these trucks [Boriboonsomsin et al., 2019]. For an example community in Southern California, this low exposure routing strategy was shown to result in more than 30% reduction in total air pollutant exposure by community members for about 40% of the 400 simulated trips [Luo et al., 2018]. This was achieved while keeping the increase in trip time to no more than 10% as compared to the fastest route. To date, the low exposure routing strategy has been evaluated at the vehicle level. That is, the benefits are estimated for scenarios where one truck takes a low exposure route instead of the fastest route. The objectives of this project are to: 1) estimate potential benefits of the strategy at the system level where multiple trucks are directed to take low exposure routes, 2) assess the impacts of such a large-scale adoption of the strategy on other transportation system performances such as travel delay and energy consumption. To achieve these goals, we propose to: 1) enhancing the existing agent-based transportation model for Riverside, California, to include truck traffic, 2) implement low exposure routing algorithm in the model, and 3) simulate the implementation of the low exposure routing strategy to evaluate its benefits and impacts at the system level.
