The key benefit of this work is the ability to collect crucial data about work zone intrusions through a more accessible interface. Documenting these intrusions is a first and critical step to better understand them in order to prevent unsafe outcomes in the future. User testing and feedback will guide the development to ensure the app is easy to use which will increase its use and the quality of data collected. The app is expected to reduce administrative costs associated with event reporting as well as handling and digitizing the paper version of the form. The pressure on this system to be high performing has also increased given the passage of bill HF1416 by the Minnesota legislature that will now allow peace officers to ticket drivers who defy flagger orders based on this reporting from work zone flaggers. This project will result in an immediately implementable technology project.
