Unlike stage-wise carriage service, the customer desires to have a bus on contract service defined by his own terms, such as type/size of the bus, origin / destination and time specifications etc. He expects special treatment for which he is ready to pay. Most of the STUs provide bus services on contract under the perception that providing bus on hire is at the loss of opportunity of scheduled operation. So, anything below the expected utilisation of vehicle and that of revenue would have to be compensated through contract bill. Though, the Casual Contract customer is 'wholesale' one, his perceptions of services are largely ignored, instead being over charged with no value addition. In absence of alternative service availability, most of the STUs have bothered less for customer perception and set the prices for bus contract based more on conventional methods than any rational thought. Due to which, STUs are experiencing decline in demand for contract bus from the public, in recent periods. The study takes overview of existing methods of bus contract in few major STUs and tries to understand the common rationale of pricing. A rational approach to the pricing policy of public passenger service on contract is established to accustom interests of both customer and operator. |
