Public Transportation is the most common mode of transportation, particularly for the low and middle class passengers in Indian cities. Majority of the public transit services in India are controlled and governed by the local Governments. It has been generally observed that there will be decrease in demand for an increased fare level, i.e., passengers tend to switch to those travel modes, which are more economical to them in terms of cost, time, security, comfort, reliability etc. So, before fixing the fares to a particular level, the transit operator should know the Price Elasticity of Demand (PED). In this study, an attempt was made to understand and analyse how the demand varies as the fares are increased for the services provided by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). Here the PED is worked out for BMTC to know the extent to which the passenger demand increases or decreases with respect to the variations in its fares. |
