摘要：	Most of the STUs in India have been operating Preventive Maintenance Schedules which are normally based on the recommendations of the OEMs. Some of them have introduced Predictive Maintenance for a few activities like Oil change, Engine Top overall etc. City operation, in particular, needs lot of attention on maintenance to improve vehicle effectiveness and reliability. Due to the number of categories required for day to day maintenance like Mechanics, Electrician, Tyre Fitter, Body Fitter, Welder etc. the cost on labour is increasing. Very few STUs have adaptability to accept the new technology being introduced by OEMs to meet the BS-IV, V, VI norms. Neither can they make changes in the infrastructure and manpower very frequently. They have, therefore, no alternative than to make best use of the available resources thereby improve productivity, reduce losses and improve overall effectiveness of the vehicle and ultimately improve total efficiency of the organisation. The best way to achieve this is to introduce Total Productive Maintenance. Some people may feel that STUs are not producing any product that can be sold in the market but a service which they produce - Seat-Kms. The quality of the service they provide to the passenger should be breakdown free, accident free with desirable comfort and clean vehicles. All this is part of TPM which can only be achieved by involvement of all the employees at various levels including corporate office. This article covers all the above aspects so that in future any STU while preparing their Maintenance Manual will definitely think why it should not be TPM?
