The paper identifies factors leading to road traffic accidents and resultant fatalities in order to devise appropriate strategies and measures. The analysis indicates that road accident deaths is higher among young age group. The analysis of road accident data 2015 reveals that about 1,374 accidents and 400 deaths take place every day on Indian roads which further translates into 57 accidents and loss of 17 lives, on an average, every hour in our country. Thirteen states having maximum share in road accidents in the country viz. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Chattisgarh, West Bengal and Haryana together accounted for 86.7 percent of all road accidents in 2015. The leading states in number of persons killed in road accidents (fatalities in road crashes) per lakh population are Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, Punjab, Chattisgarh, Goa and Himachal Pradesh. National Highways (NHs) accounted for a share of 35.0 percent in total number of persons killed and 29.1 percent in total number of persons injured in road accidents during 2015. The paper suggests that there are several factors which lead to occurrence of deaths due to road accidents. There is a need to act fast and learn from experience of successful states/union territories. |
