Public transport, and the quality with which it is provided, have much broader implications than just mobility. The paper traces the role of public transport even in shaping civilisation. With the recent emphasis on smart cities, attention is coming back to provision of quality public transport ever more powerfully. The paper gives a broad overview of the Indian scene, with inputs from what is happening outside. In the context of moving more and more people on a daily basis for work and other needs, the author is of the view that much needs to be done yet. Even in the 1930s, under a colonial government, some kind of monopoly was suggested so that unregulated competition did not result in wastages. The paper touches on the need to learn from other developing countries where concepts such as bus rapid transit are implemented to the satisfaction of the public. The experience in India is yet to reach a point where there is ready acceptance. While individual transport will have its attractions, mass public transport is essential. The author finally argues that there should be a situation in which public transport should become a political issue, as in the case of London. Particularly in urban areas, quality of life has much to do with mobility. The government and the larger society will ultimately determine the quality of public transport. |
