The present study was undertaken to evaluate fracture resistance of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) containing Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) using newly developed Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) test. Two different WMA additives, one Wax based (W) and one Surfactant (S) based were selected in this study. Two HMA mixes: HMA+0% RAP, HMA+30% RAP and two WMA mixes:WMA+30% RAP- W (wax based WMA additive), and WMA+30% RAP-S (surfactant based WMA additive) were designed and tested in the laboratory. The SCB samples of 150 mm diameter and 50 mm height with different notch depths: 20 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm were prepared in the laboratory with target air voids in range of 6.5±0.5%. The samples were tested by applying a monotonic load at a rate of 0.5 mm/min at 35℃. A critical energy release rate (J-integral) or Jc value was calculated from the SCB test. The fracture resistant ranking of the mixes based on Jc value was found to be in the following order: HMA+30% RAP>WMA+30% RAP- W>HMA+0% RAP>WMA+30% RAP-S, indicating a better fracture resistant of a mix with RAP. The WMA mix containing surfactant additive showed the lowest value of Jc, showing a poor fracture resistant of this mix compared to other mixes. |
