The present study was under taken to evaluate moisture damage, rutting, and fracture resistance performance of hot mix asphalt containing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). Two mixes, one without RAP (0% RAP) and the other mix with 30% RAP were designed in the laboratory using Marshall mix design method. The moisture damage and rutting performance of the mixes were evaluated using retained indirect tensile strength (TSR) and flow time test, respectively. The fracture resistance of mixes was evaluated using a newly adopted semi- circular bending (SCB) test. The TSR value of 30% RAP mix was found to be higher compared to a mix without RAP (0%RAP), indicating that addition of RAP did not degrade a mix as far as moisture susceptibility was concerned. Likewise, flow time value for 0% RAP and 30% RAP mixes was found to be 1925 seconds and greater than 10,000 seconds, respectively, which shows that inclusion of RAP increases rutting resistance of a mix. The critical strain energy rate or critical value of J-Integral (Jc) value for mixes with 0% RAP and 30%RAP estimated from SCB test was observed to be 0.21 and 0.41 kJ/m2, indicating that a mix containing RAP had a better fracture performance compared to the mix without RAP. Overall, the present study showed encouraging results on inclusion on RAP in asphalt mixes, and it is expected that this study would be helpfull to characterize mixes containing RAP. |
