It is indispensable to switchover to composite pavement with asphalt overlay technology in order to mitigate the occurrence of distress in the rigid pavements due to various reasons like weak subsoil, poor subgrade/design, problem of quality assurance, inefficient drainage, extreme weather conditions etc. Besides, the choice of composite pavement would minimize chance of tyre bursting and hence enhance safety of traffic. Laying of asphalt layer over existing/new rigid pavement resolves the problem such as noise pollution, frequent cracking due to poor sub soil, poor drainage, bath tub condition due to settlement of lower layers, uncomfortable riding surface due to large number of joint sand inappropriate texturing etc. The crack prevention course of an elastomeric rubber membrane known as Stress Absorbing Membrane (SAM) over a cracked surface, followed by covering of aggregate chips, and a Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) is warranted to apply on top of existing stiff/concrete pavement before laying asphalt overlay in accordance to Clause 517 of MoRTH Specifications for Road & Bridge Works (5th Revision). |
