Arch bridges have been known for aesthetics and their superior behavior since ages. Moreover, the recent developments & experiences in bridge design have seen outstanding performance of framed structures (integral structures) specifically in the stringent seismic & flood prone areas. The bridge over Baner khad (river), which is located on National Highway no.88 (NH88) in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India is such a unique "integral arch bridge" which inherits merits of the both i.e. arch bridges as well as integral bridges- The unsymmetricai shape of the bridge, which was inspired by the presence of a small hillock on one side, has added innocence to the bridge (Fig. 1 to 3) as it did not involve painful destruction to the beautiful hilly surroundings. The paper primarily describes the features, structural system, design & detailing, methodology of construction and quantity of main items of work for the bridge. Looking at the bridge, it can be realized that how a little bit of emotions towards the nature can create such an exceptional bridge which not only has elegance but also many appreciable merits such as enhanced performance during stringent seismic/ flood conditions, improved durability, smooth riding quality and reduced maintenance requirements in the absence of bearings & intermediate expansion joints. |
