The objective of this study is to develop guidelines for using the cone penetration test with pore pressure measurements (CPTu, or piezocone tests) in subsurface explorations in the state of Illinois. The project will conduct field CPTu (and seismic piezocones, SCPTu) to obtain data and establish correlations between the CPTu and the standard penetration test (SPT) for Illinois soils. The correlations will consider soil types, shear strengths of clay soils, friction angle of cohesionless sandy soils, and other geoparameters. Direct, semi-empirical, analytical, and machine-learning-based methods will be used for enhanced data interpretation and design parameters. The findings of this project will be incorporated into IDOT’s Geotechnical Manual through the development of guidelines for using the CPTu in the state of Illinois. This will expand the use of CPTu in current IDOT practices to utilize higher quality subsurface data that would reduce the cost of field exploration, design, and construction of roadways and subsurface infrastructures, as well as reduce risk and increase reliability. |
