In order to assess the potential benefits of asphalt reinforcement layers the Highways Agency SWEEP software programme was used to undertake Whole Life Cost Analyses. The theoretical modelling exercise was only on a limited set of conditions and did not model actual case histories. Actual traffic and material conditions may differ significantly to the scenarios modelled. Therefore, when applying the findings of the work to real life conditions it is important to ensure that the situation modelled is compatible with expected conditions, and that evidence of a particular reinforcing product will actually provide the extension to life expected. The modelling carried out used two significantly different scenarios; a dual three lane motorway and a single two lane carriageway from the Highways Agency network. Results showed that there is a positive economic benefit when the reinforced asphalt extends the life of the resurfacing by 2 years or more. |
