A good transport system aids in the establishment of a strong economy, and when supported by an equally strong public transport system it solves many crises that ails our cities, from congestion to pollution. When public transport system is inefficient it leads to a shift of passengers towards private modes of transport increasing the issues mentioned above; it also causes incomplete exploitation of the resources available in the sector. The paper aims to understand route rationalisation and integration within the public transport system as a solution to the two-fold problem of increased vehicles on the road and less ridership in the prevailing public transport system through the case study of Kochi, with a specialised study along the proposed Kochi Metro Rail Corridor (KMRC). |
