The performance of asphalt surface courses laid on the Scottish trunk road network is assessed on an annual basis by The Scottish Inspection Panel (SIP). This report details the results of the 2016 survey and makes a comparison with previous SIP survey results dating back to 2008. Recurring issues are highlighted and used to develop corrective action plans. The 2016 survey highlights the ongoing need for good joint construction and maintaining high skill levels within the industry. Recommendations include reducing the use of 0/14mm mixtures in the NW area, particularly in high stress areas; and re-examining data on the date of laying and production as part of future SIP surveys to help explain anomalies associated with surface course performance. |
