In recent years, the Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) track has been rapidly developing and is being widely used, and it is well known that one of the critical influencing factors to its stability is the environmental conditions which will have a huge influence to the rail temperature.The bigger the temperature variation, the more complicated the design is.But for countries located in Africa, especially Mozambique, where the temperature variation is small,if the CWR track parameters values are reasonably chosen, the CWR track design, maintenance and laying should not have to be very strict.By this way, saving labor, materials and eventually money.The main propose of this thesis is to find the reasonable parameters for a CWR track for Mozambique.This thesis studies the CWR track design under different environmental condition.Three CWR Track structures will be compared, being two structures similar to the one from Mozambique, which is a cape gauge track and the other a similar to the one from China, which is a standard gauge track, this comparison helps in analyzing the track behaviors.Two method were used for the CWR track design, one being analytical (Matlab) and the second numerical (FEM, ANSYS).Both method were validated, and proved to be reliable.This thesis, First presents the literature review of the basic knowledge needed to do this paper.Second, it presents the theory and model used, where, the selected code is the Chinese CWR track code and the FEM software that is used for modeling is the ANSYS APDL.Third,the paper presents the parametric study of a CWR track, where, it is analyzed the parameters that influence the track buckle strength.Fourth, it is done a study of CWR track on bridges,analyzing the influencing factors to the rail additional forces on bridge.Fifth, the reasonable parameters are researched.And in the end gives the conclusion of the whole paper.Through the parametric study, it was found that the major factor influencing the CWR track stability is the ballast lateral resistance, and its influence is of the same magnitude for the case of lateral stability.And it was followed by the misalignment amplitude and length.The influence of Truck Center Spacing (TCS) and rail type were also analyzed, and they have a relevant influence.The study of CWR track on bridge, showed that the simple supported bridge,seems to be more reliable for a CWR track.It has less influence to the track.The reasonable values for Mozambican CWR track should be as follows: The track lateral and longitudinal resistance should be 4.7 kN/m and 3 kN/m respectively, or above.Rail type equal or above to 57 kg and the normal fasteners should be fine.The minimum steel or weld strength of 280Mpa can guarantee the CWR track stability.The maintenance is advised to be done be done within the reasonable area (Tmax-[ΔTu]).As long [ΔTd] is bigger than the rail temperature range and if the RNT remains intact.The RNT should be calculated with the RNT Average Rail Temperature Equation or the New Recommended RNT Equation. |
