摘要：	Due to rapid urbansization, most of the cities of different sizes in India face severe traffic problems. Traditional transportation modes hevily depending on gasolin based fuel are not geared to ensure the less pollution, mobility and safety needs for the society at large. Due to this reason, incesssant movement of traffic continues to be the causes of traffic congestion, air and noise pollution coupled with the occurance of road accidents resulting to the losses of human lives. The Government of India has also initiated to develop 100 smart cities. In this context, an attempt has been made to appreciate the role on importance of smart transportation which would be an only solution not only towards addressing the presnt transport problems in the cities but also help ensure greater degree of mobility and safety to the smart cities. At this backdrop, an attempt has been made to explore ways and means to appreciate the role and importance of the smart transportation in general and its applications in cities and best practices in particular.
