The research work was carried out to investigate the experimental behaviour of bituminous concrete mix with addition of waste plastic bottles (Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)). Optimum bitumen content was determined for conventional mix by Marshall Method of mix design and found to be 5.51%. Bituminous concrete mixes were prepared with various percentages of PET (0%, 6%, 8%, 10%, 12% and 14 % of optimum bitumen content) using dry process. Mechanical properties such as Marshall Stability, Flow, Marshall Quotient, Retained Stability and Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) were determined for these mixes. Results show that with increase in quantity of PET, mechanical properties of bituminous concrete mixes improve initially up to certain extent and the optimum quantity of PET was found to be 10% by weight of optimum bitumen content, which fulfil the requirement of mechanical properties for modified mixes using waste plastic as per 1RC:SP:98-2013. A good correlation (Coefficient of correlation = 0.959) is observed between Marshall Stability Value and Indirect Tensile Strength for PET modified mixes. Hence, application of plastic waste in bituminous pavements is environmental friendly solution in terms of disposal of non-biodegradable waste plastic along with improvement in mechanical properties of bituminous mixes. |
