摘要：	State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs) are one of the most important public sector enterprises working in almost every part of the country in different forms. As these units are public sector undertakings, so the productivity of units are to be measured in terms of public welfare and service to the society rather than the profitability and financial viability. But, it is a proven fact that a business cannot survive long without earning profits and maintaining a good financial health. If there is a consistent downfall in the profit earning capacity and financial position, the business has a fear of financial distress and bankruptcy. Financial Erosion is a long term phenomenon which arises due to continues downward trend in the financial condition of a business. The basic aim of the paper is to analyse the erosion in profitability, activity and financial condition of the selected State Road Transport Undertakings. The paper evaluates the current profitability, financial and operating status of SRTUs under study. Moreover, the paper also discusses the main reason for erosion and suggests ways through which SRTUs may come out of distress. The paper is based on secondary data collected from various publications by SRTUs and Central Institute of Road Transport. Keeping in view the time, resource constraints and data availability, two major SRTUs (MSRTC & RSRTC) operating in the plain areas are selected for the study. For the purpose of in depth analysis, the financial data collected from the year 2010 to 2017 are taken into consideration. The position of MSRTC is satisfactory but not good. Revenue has increased in both the SRTUs but at the same time increase in cost has offset the effect of increase in revenue. The SRTUs should concentrate on cost reduction in order to maintain their profitability. The capital erosion of RSRTC needs an immediate action plan to overcome from the present situation. MSRTC has managed to maintain efficiency in its financial position and succeeded to avoid capital erosion.
