摘要: There is a constant endeavour around the world to evolve environment friendly methods by which the transportation cost also remains affordable. One such measure is the running of double-stack container trains. Doublestack rail transport is a form of intermodal freight transport where containers are stacked two high on rail wagon. Introduced in North America in 1984, double stack has become increasingly common, being used for nearly 70% of United States' intermodal shipments. The cost of rail transport can be reduced by improving the way containers are stacked on the train, so that the number of wagons required to carry a given load and the running costs of the train are minimised. Economic growth and trade expansion in recent years have enhanced the relevance of railways as a critical element in the globalisation of the Indian economy. In the post-liberalisation era (1991 onwards) container traffic has increased more than seven fold. Container traffic, besides registering the impressive growth, also covers a vast hinterland for each port which calls for a transport infrastructure capable of providing sufficient capacity for fast, cost effective service to Indian shippers and enable them to face the competitive world markets. To meet the increasing demand of container transportation, the concept of "Double Stack Container (DSC)" has been introduced. Also, it has been reiterated Jor quite some time that better connectivity of the hinterland and the ports is the key to achieving the set ambitious growth targets for the development of the ports and related infrastructure and thereby achieve the desired economic development. To attain the target volumes of the container rail operators and to attract the volumes to container segment, the provision of reliable, regular and integrated services is necessary along with the last mile connectivity. Seamless transportation of goods is indeed the need of the hour. Freight transportation costs by rail are much higher than in most countries as freight tariffs in India have been kept high to subsidise passenger traffic. The Indian Railways is considered to have the highest freight tariffs in the world with one of the lowest passenger tariff levels. Persistent subsidisation of commuter fares through freight hikes has diverted a huge chunk of the Railways' bread-winner business of moving goods to cheaper roadways. The Railways now has only 36% of the transport market share, roads account for 57% of all goods movement.
