Evolving the capacity of unsignalised intersection is a topic which has been debated since decades due to the complexity involved in the realistic estimation of gap phenomena. Different approaches have been applied to estimate the capacity. Further, many methods have been developed to estimate the critical gap value which is the key parameter for the capacity estimation in case of most widely used method of gap acceptance theory. Complexity of gap phenomena has been addressed by involving different parameters in critical gap estimation as well as capacity calculations. Each method has its own suitability criteria with respect to traffic characteristics. This review paper tries to compare the methods available and their suitability for mixed traffic scenario of India where priority rules do not exist or are not being followed. Existing studies have been categorised into two groups namely, homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic conditions. Additionally, critical gap values observed worldwide have been presented for ready reference. This paper critically reviews the applicability of the various parameters with respect to Indian traffic conditions which are not yet considered for Indian conditions. Based on this review, the authors feel it is prudent to consider the parameters discussed in this paper which can help in arriving at more accurate critical gap calculations under Indian traffic conditions. |
