摘要: Uncontrolled, intersections are an integral part of the Indian road network both in the inter-urban and suburban environs. It is to be noted here that most of the capacity analysis procedures and the results for uncontrolled intersections are evolved based on gap-acceptance theory in the case of homogeneous traffic conditions and in this regard, the critical gap is an important parameter for the capacity estimation of uncontrolled intersections. Eventually, in majority of studies on critical gap estimation reported under homogenous traffic conditions, the phenomenon of lane discipline and the rule of priority are given the due respect. At the same time, the interaction phenomenon and driver behaviour observed at uncontrolled intersections under heterogeneous traffic conditions are vastly different. Hence, the aspect of estimation of capacity of uncontrolled intersections for the heterogeneous traffic mix continues to be a grey area of research as there is no indigenous procedure evolved to estimate the capacity of such intersection. Conforming to the site selection criteria listed in the CSIR Sponsored Study titled “Development of Indian Highway Capacity Manual”, an uncontrolled intersectioれ namely, Bukkathurai intersection located on Chennai - Villupuram section of National Highway-45 (NH-45) was selected in this study for the estimation of critical gap. Videographic survey was carried out at the above selected uncontrolled T intersection using two cameras mounted at a height of 8 to 10 metres above the ground level. Based on the above collected data, reasonably accurate estimates of critical gap are evolved in this paper by considering different vehicle types and by deploying different methods namely Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM), Clearing Behaviour Method (Zondy, 2010 & Satish Chandra, 2011), Ashworth Method, Greenshields Method, Harder Method and Raff Method. Based on the above analysis, the best method that can be deployed for the estimation of critical gap values far Indian traffic condition is eventually proposed in the paper.
