摘要: The paper aims at studying the performance of a roundabout in mixed traffic conditions and developing a relation for evaluating capacity of a roundabout. Indian traffic conditions, being heterogeneous in nature, are very much different from traffic conditions of other developed countries such as U.S, hence there is a need to develop capacity models for Indian traffic conditions. The study will be immensely useful to rationally work out the capacity of roundabouts based on mixed traffic in Indian scenario. Traffic flow characteristics of selected roundabouts are studied to develop capacity relating entry capacity and circulating flow which was validated with respect to other roundabouts. A number of methods for estimation of critical gap of entry traffic were evaluated and most appropriate method was selected for assessment of roundabout capacity. For this study, initially four case study roundabouts located at different parts of New Delhi urban area were considered for collection of data. The critical gap and average headway for the four case study roundabouts were evaluated, and a capacity model in line with the U.S Highway Capacity Manual 2010 was developed for different sizes of the roundabout. Traffic flow characteristics of Roundabout at Intersections namely Nyaya Marg and Satya Marg near Italy Embassy at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi were studied in detail and finally the data for thirteen roundabouts from different parts of the country were considered for the development of capacity model with respect to Total Approach Capacity of the roundabout. In addition, the values of PCUs for different types of vehicles under varying traffic composition were also developed.
