The planning of a smart city based on the principles of compact city needs a comprehensive understariding of urban fabric, transport infrastructure development, densification process, mixed land use, service management etc. If planning is centred on public transport then availability and quality of transit system is important for proximate development, connectivity of urban areas and accessibility to city services. The Toyama Municipal Government (Japan) adopted planning strategies to create the image of compact city through revitalisation of public transport and encourage city residents to relocate various land use zones along the public transport corridors. The promotion of residential encouraged zones along the public transport line reflects the characteristics of both compactness and smartness of the city. Further, initiatives were taken to make the city centre more attractive and liveable by creating and concentrating civic amenities in this area. The planning of greenfield/ brownfield areas require scientific study in selection of technology to fill up the infrastructure gap between parent city (developed city) and smart city with financial viability. It requires a long term transport plan to facilitate the growth of city in such a way that ensures efficient and convenient mobility with adequate livelihood options and infrastructure provisions along with maximum use of information and communication technologies. |
