A model road, designed to represent a system weakened by spring thaw, was constructed in a test facility. The road was divided into three sections. A geogrid was installed beneath the base course in two of the test sections, leaving the third as a control section. Trafficking was done in two lanes: each lane was subjected to a different tire pressure. Rutting was measured after various amounts of trafficking. The number of cycles required to reach a given level of rutting in one section divided by the number of cycles required in another section to reach the same level of rutting is defined as the traffic benefit ratio (TBR). The TBR for reinforcement was on the order of 2 to 10 and the TBR for tire pressure was on the order of 0.5 to 7. TBRs varied depending on the type of geogrid and the thickness of the base course material. |
