Ergonomic guidelines for traveler information systems were developed as one part of an effort to ensure that new technologies associated with Intelligent Transportation Systems are available to all persons, and especially to persons with sensory, cognitive, and mobility impairments. The importance of ensuring that World Wide Web-based traveler information systems are accessible is highlighted. The ergonomic guidelines are based on research and empirical evidence from Europe and North America and are primarily concerned with static, dynamic, and tactile signs or signage systems that are used in passenger transport facilities. Many sections of the guidelines have broader applications to other information systems that involve the person-machine interface. The ergonomic guidelines are in the process of being converted to an accessible format that will be available on the Technology Access Program website at Oregon State University. The development of ergonomic guidelines for passenger information systems has been under way for a number of years in Europe and North America. The source documents from these areas are integrated, and commentary or discussion is provided where there are significant differences of opinion or discrepancies in operating practices. The guidelines have been developed for use both by transportation and by design professionals involved with the specification, procurement, and implementation of basic or sophisticated information systems. Design standards need to recognize the variability and the associated needs of all persons. The underlying principle of "design for all" is the basis for the ergonomic guidelines. |
