Under the Strategic Highway Researh Program, Contract H-106, a full scale investigation of the performance of materials and methods for resealing joints in concrete pavements has been initiatied. Over 1,600 joints were installed employing 4 different installation methods and 12 sealant materials, including rubberized asphalt, silicone, and polysulfide, at 5 sites across the United States. Laboratory analysis of the sealant material properties and evaluation of field performance have been conducted and the results analyzed. Some significant performance differences have been noted between materials and placement methods, although the average adhesion and spall-related failure is only 2.3% of the joint lengths. Initial correlations between laboratory test results and field performance indicate that some ASTM D-3407 tests, as well as ASTM D-412 tests, seem to relate slightly to adhesion loss. |
